Schulz Landscape

Overview
After designing several landscapes for clients, in 2007 Betsy Schulz wanted to incorporate her creative ideas into her own landscape, taking into consideration the several small outdoor spaces that comprise the yard. The front yard is landscaped with drought-tolerant plants on mounds of soil and rock that serve as a buffer to the busy street in front, with plants chosen to complement the native vegetation of the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve across the street. The gravel driveway allows for good drainage and reduces the run-off into the Los Peñasquitos Marsh in the reserve. A stepped concrete front deck doubles as an entry and a seating area for watching birds in the marsh. A rolling deck hides a hot tub with a view to the ocean. The central patio serves as an outdoor eating and entertaining area. The very back yard is a wildlife oasis with a stream, pond, fruit trees and drought-tolerant plants. A deck and shed serve as additional storage and studio areas, and strategically planted bamboo provides privacy.
