Harbor Point Mural

Overview
Artist Betsy Schulz created a Pt. Loma inspired mural at 5055 North Harbor for the Sentre Partners and the Peckham Family. The imagery reflects the history and the spirit of the Pt. Loma area from the past to the present. She created sculpted tiles of the Pt. Loma lighthouse, PC sail boats racing, sea birds and fish. Photos specific to Pt. Loma were obtained from the San Diego Historical Society and other sources. Then they were silk-screened onto tiles to use throughout the mural. Those include a large map of the area from the 1920’s, the loma sign, Ronald Regan Aircraft Carrier, a couple fighter planes and a couple at Lover’s Leap.

As part of the project, she engaged teenagers from the Juvenile Court and Community Schools(JCCS) to help make tiles. This was facilitated through ARTS (A Reason To Survive) located in Liberty Station. She also mentored a student from High-Tech High for three weeks during the project.

It is important for her as a professional artist to help guide students and give them experiences that may help them in their future. During the course of every project she creates opportunities to involve the local community.
