In 2003 Betsy Schulz designed two sets of arches that were chosen by the City of Solana Beach to replace the town’s South end entry sign. The tallest set of arches supports the city’s name “Solana Beach”. The smaller set of arches supports the words “Coastal Rail Trail”. The columns will be hand-sculpted concrete. Fossils, shells, birds, fish, farming, people, small signs, story tiles, as well as metal and ceramic artifacts will artistically tell Solana Beach history. The planning for the project includes many interviews, historical research, making scale models and full-size drawings. Workshops have been held to give residents an opportunity to make tiles.

(1) Before
The sign to the south entrance to Solana Beach was wood & showing it’s age. The city asked for artist’s proposals to replace it.

(4) Workshop 2
In September of 2005 all Solana Beach residents were invited to help make fossil tiles & word tiles to be used on the columns. Residents also shared stories & bought donor tiles to help support the project.

Standford Signs fabricated the structural posts, arches & letters on Thursday, September 29, 2005.

(8) Concrete columns will be built around the posts, based on scale models. Then tiles, stone, shells & other artifacts will be collected and/or made to depict Solana Beach History from 8,500 years ago until today. These items will be placed on full-size template patterns, then transported to the site for installation.
