Betsy Schulz designed this Hawaiian Inspired mural for Java Kai, a small cafe in Del Mar, California. The owners, Vince and Sheri Martinelli wanted art that made the cafe a landmark as well as fun and interesting for children and adults alike. The mural took approximately four months (850 hrs) to complete.

(1) The Concept
The concept for the mural was first painted in watercolor. Once approved, Betsy sculpted relief fish tiles. The hand-made tiles, metal, rocks and shells were used in the final piece. There are also word tiles with inspirational sayings.

(2,3,) Student Participation
Students from Del Mar Heights
Elementary School helped make tiles and grout the mural.

(4,5) Relief Tiles
Many of the tiles are sculpted in relief, making this turtle seem to swim out of the mural.

(6) The Final 6’6” x 10’ 6” Mural
The mural is mostly made up of tiles, but also contains rocks, metal, beads and shells. Three different colors of grout were used, red, yellow and blue to help tie color tile areas together.
