Betsy Schulz worked with Betty Hilbert, the Director of the Jolla Presbyterian Preschool to realize the landscape plan of Rusty Keeler, a designer from New York. Schulz used Keeler’s description to create a dream-like nature-inspired La Jolla Cove. This area took two months to complete and cost approximately $12,000. Private donations covered the costs.

(1) Before the construction began the space was cold and uninspired. We started the transformation by using rebar and block to form the under structure for the concrete sculpture.

(2) The new sewer pipe was donated by Filanc Construction. It would become a wonderful volcano tunnel.

(3,4) After the block and rebar base were finished, the shape began to take place with concrete. Then a finer grade concrete was used to sculpt the final surface of the sculpture.

(9,10,11,12,13) The sculptural tide pool area consists of a cave, three wooden docks, two planters, a small geyser, a tiki hut house, the sandy beach, volcano and the tunnel through the mountain.
