Betsy Schulz worked with Becky Candra, the Director of the Jolla United Methodist Preschool to realize the landscape plan of Rusty Keeler, a designer from New York. Schulz used Keeler’s description to create a dreamlike nature-inspired sculptural bench and stream bed patio. This area took one month to complete and cost approximately $12,000. Private donations covered the costs.

(1) The area before construction was used for waiting parents, even though a bike path ran through it. The benches also obstructed the flow into the rooms.

(2) The area after construction became an outdoor classroom & waiting area with easy traffic flow through the space.

(3) Once the old concrete was removed, forms were placed & concrete poured with different sized round river rock sprinkled throughout to create a stream bed.

(5) Schulz & the volunteers grouted the mosaic areas with blue grout.

(6) Schulz & Eric Neilson installed the centerpiece fountain sculpted by Carol Mayfield. The fountain was a memorial for a parent who died of cancer.

(8) The bench sculpted by Schulz & Tegebo resembles the bluffs of the nearby ocean. The mosaic represents the water that drains from the rocks after the waves recede. The mosaic starts at the base of the bronze fountain & flows through the space to create a stream bed effect. That feeling is enhanced by the varied stones in the surrounding concrete. Overall the look is natural & soothing.

(9) The opening celebration for the project was held on October 26th, the first day of the Paradise and Cedar fires in San Diego.
