Betsy Schulz worked with Becky Candra, the Director of the Jolla United Methodist Preschool to realize the landscape plan of Rusty Keeler, a playground designer from New York. Schulz used Keeler’s description to create a dream-like nature-inspired play sculptures and a mural for the children to enjoy. This area took two months to complete and cost approximately $12,000. Private donations covered the costs.

(1) Before the project began the play area was dull & surfaces hard & flat. The area needed a new design appropriate for two to three year olds.

(2, 3) The base of the planter bench & sand box are concrete block & brick covered with concrete. The back wall was cleaned & prepped for a mosaic.

(4) The stiff concrete was sculpted by Schulz & Tegebo. A car/marble ramp was created & all edges were rounded.

(5) Once the benches were completed the wall mural was started.

(6) Schulz & volunteers mosaiced small insets in the planter bench & sand box to create the effect of water rolling off.

(7) Volunteers used thin set to apply the collected broken tile. All broken tile was donated or recycled from other projects. A lot of gloves were needed for the rough work.

(8,9) Once all the tiles were applied & set, different colors of grout were used to enhance the color separation. A magical underwater scene was created with areas in between the children can use as a chalk board.
