Betsy Schulz and Linda Danninger worked with the 2003 preschool class from Hanna Fenichel to create a sculpture for the annual school fund-raiser. During the project the children were exposed to the work of Nikki De Saint Phalle. They took a field trip to Balboa Park to view her sculptures and looked at numerous books about the artist’s work. They were also encouraged to create mosaics in class using paper, magnets, beads and other materials. Then they were asked to create their own creature to mosaic. They picked a dinosaur as their creature. We made a model then scaled it up to create a 7’ x 3’ x 3’ sculpture that the children could climb on. The parents, children and teachers mosaiced the piece. The mosaic materials were donated by T.B. Penick & Sons for this project. The Gans family under-wrote the project for $1,000 during the spring fundraiser of 2003.

(5) Each school day for a month the children at Hanna Fenichel put marbles on the concrete sculpture base.

(6) The children mosaiced the small model too. It gave them an opportunity to use their small motor skills. We worked in groups of two for three days until the model was finished.

(7,8) This activity gave the children an opportunity to understand and experience project-based learning. Also they were able to relate the art inspiration to the final product. Children have an amazing capacity to learn, understand & create.
